Let’s start with what schizophrenia is first.
It is a mental disorder that causes individuals to interpret reality abnormally and struggle to distinguish between what is real and what is not. Unfortunately, schizophrenia has been a serious issue in society since ancient times. Schizophrenia affects approximately 24 million people or 1 in 300 people worldwide.
The question is, can we identify everyone who has this disease, or do we simply choose to ignore them? If we continue to ignore and cover up these problems, we will create a social issue that cannot be underestimated. An untreated patient may feel incredibly lonely or even commit suicide at a young age. Sadly, treatment for schizophrenia is both time-consuming and expensive. I understand this firsthand because I am the mother of a child with schizophrenia.
While establishing Cookie Monksters, I made a promise to myself not to get emotionally involved. However, as a parent, I understand the challenges that come with supporting a child and the desperation that arises when one feels helpless. Hence, I have selflessly tried my best to help my child and realized that many other mothers are in the same boat. As a result, I have initiated a social movement aimed at supporting these mothers both by raising awareness on schizophrenia and by sharing a portion of our income with them.
This decision has lightened the burden on me, and I hope it will help others too.
Healthy Cookie
It may sound too good to be true, but a healthy cookie is possible. Perhaps the question isn’t whether a cookie is inherently unhealthy, but rather how we produce and consume it. Can we do it differently? And what about the power of stories? Who isn’t convinced by a good story, especially when accompanied by a cookie?
With the Cookie Monksters, Bahar Akar is an inspiring entrepreneur who sheds light on our interconnectedness, regardless of how strongly we may ignore it. Our physical health, mental health, and personal and communal well-being are all intertwined.
Giving shape to a cookie that includes ingredients like egg, butter, almond flour, coconut flour, himalayan pink salt, and monkfruit extract is no easy feat. But with love and care, anything is possible!
Similarly, Bahar calls on us to rethink how we approach schizophrenia. Can we start by simply talking about it more? Would that provide more opportunities for research and understanding? What kind of networks could we create to share wisdom and alleviate the burden?
In Cookie We Trust! It will make a difference!
